How to optimize efficacy of ‘Formal learning’

It is necessary to activate formal learning in order to help employees apply their learning on the job.  Let me elaborate further.

Formal Learning in work environment and 70-20-10 rule:

Most people are familiar with these statistics:

– 70% of development happens on the job
– 20% is through mentoring and coaching
– 10% is through formal learning which includes instructor led workshops and e-learning courses

Not only are these statistics familiar, they intuitively make sense. We have grown up with teachers, coaches and parents telling us “practice makes perfect”. So, we practiced and practiced and got better and better at riding a bike or playing the piano.

How can we use this analogy in Corporate Training?

Question: Even though 70% (70-20-10 rule) of development or skill building happens on the job, where do most corporations spend their formal learning and development budgets?
The answer: Most of the corporations spend maximum percentage of their formal learning and training budget in formal training.  However, as much as this formal training is essential, it may not produce expected results as  only 10% of development happens during training.

Question: If that is the case, what can Corporations do the optimize efficacy of formal learning programs?
The answer:  They can do so by creating opportunities and work environments where the learners can apply their learning and create an impact.

Question: Which content can help their learners practice and apply the content from the course on the job?
The answer: Courses, that are curated specifically for real-life on-the-job skills, will be required in order to achieve on-the-job success.  These courses should ideally contain step-by-step instruction on how to apply learning on the job and provide measurable yardsticks to determine its success.
